A nursing home patient on Hilton Head Island was sexually assaulted by one of the facility’s employees, according to a report from Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the report, investigators arrived at the Life Care Center of Hilton Head around 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 2, after receiving a report of a sexual assault that occurred overnight.
A nurse who worked at the facility said she went to a patient’s room around 1:15 p.m. and found the patient “upset and crying.” After asking what was wrong, the patient told the nurse she had been assaulted. Much of the Sheriff’s Office report was redacted, so further information that was given by the nurse was unavailable.
The Life Care Center of Hilton Head has yet to comment on the incident.
In accordance with the Life Care Center’s policies, the nursing home reported the incident to the Sheriff’s Office, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, and other agencies.
Capt. Bob Bromage of the Sheriff’s Office said the suspect in the assault was identified as a nursing home employee. The police report says the suspect has been “placed on suspension.” Bromage said the Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the alleged crime.
The Life Care Centers of America Code of Conduct, says the agency doesn’t “tolerate any type of abuse or neglect” The policy also says that associates have a duty to protect residents from all forms of abuse.
