Riding ATVs (all-terrain vehicles) is a popular pastime for many individuals. In a collision, ATVs are more dangerous than passenger vehicles. The rider of an ATV remains completely exposed and unprotected from collision impact. Thousands of collisions and incidents happen yearly. ATV accidents can cause traumatic brain injury.

The Dangers of Improperly Using ATV’s
One leading cause of ATV collisions is operating the ATV on a paved surface. ATVs are designed for off-road use only and do not handle well on pavement. Another leading cause is riding double on an ATV that isn’t designed to carry a passenger. Most ATVs are designed for only one rider. Other causes include riding without adult supervision; performing dangerous stunts and maneuvers; operating in unfamiliar areas or terrain; and even non-recreational uses such as plowing farms and transporting materials.
The most common deadly injury in ATV accidents is traumatic brain injury (TBI). TBIs occur when the brain suffers damage from a sudden impact or jolt to the head. In ATV accidents, riders are at risk of sustaining TBIs due to the high speeds and off-road terrain involved. The violent nature of an ATV accident can easily lead to a rider being thrown from the vehicle or colliding with objects such as trees or rocks, resulting in severe head trauma. Symptoms of TBI can range from mild concussion to more serious issues such as cognitive impairment, memory loss, and even coma or death.
Even when wearing a helmet, an ATV rider can sustain serious injuries because the remainder of the rider’s body is still exposed to impact and other potential dangers. While helmets are crucial in protecting the head and reducing the risk of traumatic brain injuries, they do not provide full-body protection. Injuries such as broken bones, spinal cord damage, internal organ injuries, and severe lacerations can still occur during ATV accidents.
